It is the county's main landmark and one of the most important Gothic monuments in Romania.
About the place
After 1440, John Hunyadi turned an older fortification into his family seat. His son, King Matthias Corvinus, extended it after 1458, and Prince Gabriel Bethlen rebuilt it in the early 17th century. You enter over a wooden bridge on stone piers, then visit the Knights' Hall, the Diet Hall, the towers and the courtyards.
From 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the castle opens on Monday from noon to 5 pm and Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Tickets cost 55 lei for adults, 30 lei for pensioners and 15 lei for pupils and students, and include the Guild House and the archaeology exhibition. The photo fee is 15 lei, and a guide costs 60 lei in Romanian or 100 lei in English or Hungarian.
