About the place
The monastery is about 13 km from Hațeg, within Silvașu de Sus village. The stone church, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, was rebuilt from its foundations in 1564 by Princess Zamfira, daughter of Prince Moise, and is a listed monument. A community of nuns has lived here since 1976.
Arsenie Boca was abbot at Prislop from 1948 to 1959 and is buried in the monastery cemetery. The Synod canonised him in 2024 as Saint Arsenie the Confessor of Prislop, with his feast on 28 November, when thousands of pilgrims come.
Good to know
- Avoid 28 November and nearby weekends if you want quiet: roads and car parks jam.
- Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Come early in the morning, before the pilgrim coaches.
